Abstract

Abstract: Learning activities at the school level were found to be still conventional and less involved in the role of students in discussion activities. One of the learning approaches with the concept of self -learning to facilitate teachers and students through a more effective learning process is the Problem Based Learning (PBM) approach. The purpose of this study is to see the importance of PBM approach in improving learning efficiency skills to deal with problems and identify the strengths of PBM approach in improving student motivation. In short, the implementation of PBM involves three phases consisting of seven steps, namely step one is group formation, step two is problem identification, step three is generating ideas, step four is learning issues, step five is self -directed learning, step six is synthesis and application and step seven is self -reflection. The importance of this study is to increase student motivation in the process of generating ideas and decision making in group activities. Implications of the study show that PBM can improve critical thinking skills, self -directed learning (PTK), communication skills, group work skills, technology skills, and soft skills among students. Therefore, the frequency of use of PBM approach among students needs to be increased in the learning activities of all subjects in school.
