The Building Energy Index (BEI) Evaluation for Libraries in Malaysian Public Universities: A Case Study of UiTM Perak
Abstract
Energy efficiency is a critical concern for Malaysian public universities amidst increasing awareness of environmental sustainability and the pressing need to mitigate energy costs. This abstract presents an overview of the current issues and challenges surrounding the implementation of energy efficiency measures within the context of Malaysian public universities. Numerous public universities in Malaysia are striving to enhance energy efficiency in response to mounting concerns regarding environmental sustainability and escalating energy expenses. This research investigates the energy efficiency implementation within Malaysian public universities, in focus of library building in universities, seeking to evaluate and optimize energy usage patterns. The study aims to assess and enhance energy efficiency in Malaysian public universities by utilizing the Building Energy Index (BEI). It centers on library buildings at UiTM Perak, examining patterns of electricity consumption and appliance use to recommend strategies for lowering energy expenses. The methodology includes conducting case studies at two UiTM Perak campuses, where data on electrical load consumption and the total floor area were gathered to compute the BEI and evaluate energy efficiency. The first section outlines the significance of energy efficiency in the higher education sector, emphasizing its role in reducing carbon emissions, enhancing operational efficiency, and promoting sustainable development. The second section delves into the specific challenges faced by Malaysian public universities in implementing energy efficiency initiatives. These challenges include limited financial resources, outdated infrastructure, bureaucratic hurdles, and a lack of awareness and expertise among university stakeholders. The third section highlights the importance of addressing these challenges through comprehensive strategies and policies tailored to the unique needs of Malaysian public universities. This includes investing in energy-efficient technologies, retrofitting existing buildings, promoting behaviour change through education and awareness campaigns, and fostering partnerships with energy service companies (ESCOs) and government agencies. The final section is the calculation involved in identifying the energy efficiency level in the selected case studies through the Building Energy Index (BEI) formula. By overcoming the current issues and challenges, Malaysian public universities can serve as role models for sustainable energy management, contribute to national energy security, and create a greener and more resilient future for generations to come.
