Flood Relief Management for Resident in Shah Alam Selangor, Malaysia
Abstract
Floods are among the most devastating natural disasters in Malaysia, causing significant disruptions and economic losses each year. The December 2021 flood, which severely affected Shah Alam, Selangor, highlighted the region's vulnerability to such events. This study aims to address the challenges of flood relief management in Shah Alam by pursuing three key objectives: first, to identify the existing flood relief management strategies for residents; second, to determine the causes and impacts of flooding on the affected population; and third, to propose targeted improvements for enhancing flood relief management. Through a quantitative methodology, this study surveyed residents' experiences and perceptions of various agencies involved in flood management. The findings indicate that while there is recognition of government efforts, critical gaps remain in addressing both natural and human-induced causes of flooding. Key issues identified include inadequate infrastructure, poor coordination among agencies, and a lack of community engagement. To address these challenges, the study recommends enhancing inter-agency coordination, upgrading infrastructure to better withstand extreme weather events, and increasing community involvement through education and preparedness initiatives. These recommendations are aimed at helping authorities develop more resilient flood management strategies, thereby reducing the impact of future floods and ensuring the safety and well-being of Shah Alam residents.
