Daylighting, the use of natural light to illuminate interiors, is vital in educational facilities, especially in spaces like school assembly halls. This study focuses on the assembly hall of Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Malaysia, a historical building with neoclassical design that faces challenges in meeting modern daylighting standards. The building’s orientation causes excessive direct sunlight, leading to visual discomfort and heat gain. This research aims to analyse the effect of external shading devices on the halls’ illuminance levels to enhance the indoor environment quality. Using Autodesk Revit for 3D modelling and Autodesk Insight ElumTools (AIE) for simulation, the study compares the existing window and top-hung designs with proposed installations of horizontal louver panels and double low-E glass. The objective is to achieve the Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) standard of 300 lux for multipurpose hall illumination. The simulation results reveal that the existing design causes excessive illuminance, particularly during summer solstice, with peaks up to 1412 lx. The proposed design, incorporating horizontal louver panels and double low-E glass, significantly reduces illuminance levels, aligning closer to JKR standard. For instance, the highest illuminance level in the proposed design during the summer solstice reduced to 447 lx. The results show that the installation of these external shading devices effectively mitigates the issues of glare and heat gain, ensuring better thermal comfort and visual comfort. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that innovative shading solutions can optimize daylighting in historical buildings, contributing to a more sustainable and conducive learning environment. The findings highlight the importance of integrating modern design strategies in educational buildings to balance natural light penetration with indoor comfort.
