Preference of Urban Park Characteristics in Malaysia by Individual’s with Mental Health Problem

Abstract

Numerous examples from western countries indicate that the eight perceived sensory dimensions which are serene, nature, rich in species, space, prospect, refuge, social and culture can be used as a reliable tool for evaluating and planning urban green space, but it is unknown whether this is applicable to Malaysia. Thus, this study is to assesses the preference of park characteristics by the urban park user with different mental health levels. This study uses quantitative method by using a questionnaire given to the visitors (n=382) of the Perdana Botanical Park and Titiwangsa Lake Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. The findings demonstrated that serene, nature, rich in species, space, prospect, refuge, social and culture were strongly desired by the individuals with different mental health level. The findings can help landscape architects and urban planners argue for the creation of urban parks with different mental health level as a resource for enhancing people's quality of life and enabling inclusive policy-making.
