Study of Undergraduates’ Preferred Positive Humor Styles

Abstract

Humor is used by all to communicate. When used correctly, humor can benefit both the sender and the receiver of the message. Scholars have researched the use of humor in classrooms, and their findings indicate positive outcomes in teaching and learning. There are four different types of humor styles. Self-affiliated and self-enhancing styles are categorized as positive, while self-defeating and aggressive styles are considered negative. This preliminary research investigated students’ preferred positive humor styles to help educators better manage their classrooms. The findings showed that students strongly prefer a self-affiliate style while seeming undecided about using a self-enhancing style.
