Meneroka Kefahaman Konsep Ungkapan Algebra Dalam Kalangan Murid Tingkatan Empat di Tumpat: Satu Kajian Kes
Abstract

Abstract: Algebraic expression is a continuation of the Relation and algebra studied in elementary school and it is very crucial for learning mathematics to a higher level. However, students have difficulties in learning algebra and found that this topic is hard and overwhelmed. This study was conducted to explore students' understanding of algebraic expressions, the types of errors and problems faced by students in solving mathematical problems involving algebraic expressions. This study is a case study that used a task-based interview method and involved six form four students in Tumpat. The study revealed that the participants have different understandings in algebraic expressions, namely numbers and letters, numbers and variables, numbers and values, constants and things and the value of x. The result showed the highest errors made by students in solving problems involving algebraic expressions is processing skill errors (37%), followed by coding errors (19%), reading errors (17%), comprehension errors (15%) and transformation errors (12 %). The findings of the study also found that the problems of the students face in solving math problems, including the impacts of teacher’s burden in teaching, the impact of the covid-19 outbreak on student learning and the large number of students in one class. Therefore, Ministry of Education has to increase the number of staff to reduce the teachers’ burden dan emphasize the ratio of teacher and student per class to control the number of students in one class.
