The Prospects of a Halal Food Safety Academic Programme in Malaysian Higher Education: A Review
Abstract
The guarantee of halal food safety in Islamic practice emphasises the importance of consuming food that adheres to Islamic dietary standards and is devoid of any potential hazards. However, the absence of a halal food safety academic course in Malaysian higher education is a major problem for the future of the country's food business. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of establishing a halal food safety academic programme in Malaysian higher education institutions. This study outlines the following criteria for the programme:(a) to improve understanding of halal food safety rules, it is recommended to integrate components of Islamic jurisprudence into the curriculum; (b) provide extensive information regarding Malaysian food rules and regulations to aid students in efficiently navigating the regulatory system; (c) offer hands-on learning opportunities in halal food production and monitoring through laboratory instruction, internships, and on-site visits; (d) collaborate with industry experts during the development and execution of the plan to ensure its alignment with market demands; and (e) integrate research components to empower students to develop innovative solutions for food safety issues. Ultimately, introducing a halal food safety academic course at Malaysian higher education institutions could have a substantial impact on the progress of halal food safety and quality in Malaysia. Further investigation is required in various fields related to the development of halal food safety academic programmes in Malaysian higher education.
