Abstract

This study explores the motivations of Malaysian orchestral musicians to protect their hearing and aims to determine a practical hearing health approach tailored to this population. A total of eleven Malaysian orchestral musicians participated in three separate group interviews structured around specific guided questions to investigate their perspectives and experiences. The musicians often found their work environment excessively loud but seldom took precautions or employed ineffective methods. Their reluctance to take preventive action was primarily due to their limited understanding of how loud music could impact their hearing and the lack of knowledge about effective hearing protection strategies. Malaysian musicians typically initiate action only when they experience symptoms, resorting to ineffective methods and without proper guidance from healthcare providers. Musicians has the perception that tolerating loud sounds signifies experience and a well-trained ear, leading to a stigma against wearing hearing protection. Much of the negative perception surrounding the use of hearing protection stemmed from past experience wearing inappropriate devices. It is evident that targeted education, specifically tailored to musicians’ needs, is crucial. Through interviews and discussions, we identified several aspects that could enhance active hearing care among Malaysian orchestral musicians.
