Studies Examining the Application of Universal Design for Learning in K-12 Classrooms: A Literature Review
Abstract
This literature review involves research done in the field of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in relation to K-12 or school-based education. A number of studies have been selected for comparison and review in terms of methodology, purpose, findings and implications based on the 3 main principles of UDL. The review found that the diverse scope of the selected studies led to varying interpretations of UDL principles and their application to mainstream teaching was dependent on factors that required further investigation. The review highlights issues related to (a) choice of methodology, (b) application of UDL principles measured and (c) long-term efficacy of the findings. The research also seems to indicate that the application of UDL principles and frameworks at K-12 level would require more concise pedagogical methods than the general conclusions of UDL research further up the educational ladder often demonstrate.
