Experimentation of Combined Stoneware Clay and Organic Waste for Stabilization of Clay Bodies

The dumping of organic waste such as seashells and even eggshells today has made this issue of interest to researchers to find solutions to reduce the problems arising from the dumping of waste materials that are difficult to decompose. Seashells and eggshells contain 80-99% calcium carbonate content, and this makes them difficult to decompose naturally and takes quite a long time. This study was conducted to test the suitability of organic waste consisting of seashells and chicken eggshells to form the formulation of the clay body by using the line blend method. This study is a studio experiment that will use a mixed-method. This experiment will also use commercial stoneware clay, while chicken eggshells and seashells will be obtained from a concentrated location that is the beach and cafeteria on campus. Among the aspects of concern to researchers are physical experiments (plasticity, dry shrinkage, firing shrinkage, and porosity). The results of the study proved that a mixture of stoneware clay and seashells by 10% has been able to reduce the rate of dry shrinkage and firing shrinkage. In fact, it has also been proven to increase the physical strength of ceramic bodies after firing at a temperature of 1000℃. while the egg powder mixture was found to cause problems after firing at 900℃ and 1000℃ making it unsuitable to be mixed on ceramic bodies.

Noor Mustaqim Bin Mohamed is currently studying Master of Art (Fine Art- Ceramic Craft and Industry) at School of The Arts, (Product Design Department), Universiti Sains Malaysia. Noor Mustaqim is also conducting research in ceramic material, technique, and process. Their current project is 'Experimentation of Clay with Organic Waste for Raku Techniques'.
