Antibacterial Activity of Kaffir Lime Leaves (Citrus hystrix) on Selected Foodborne Pathogens

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the antibacterial activity water- based extracts of kaffir lime leaves against selected foodborne pathogens namely Salmonella typhi ATCC 14028, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The antibacterial activity of the extract was determined using agar disc diffusion method at four different concentrations of 150 mg/ml, 200 mg/ml, 250 mg/ml and 300 mg/ml. Results showed that clear zones were observed only against S. typhi, S. aureus and E. coli but not against B. cereus at four different concentrations. Largest diameter of inhibition zone was produced against S, typhi (8.67 ± 0.67 mm) while the smallest diameter zone was observed against E. coli (6.83 ± 0.17 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) value identified were the same with the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) value obtained. Thus, Kaffir lime leaves extract showed good antibacterial characteristic against the foodborne pathogen S. typhi, S. aureus and E. coli.
