Personal Duties And Academic Requirements In Investigating The Manuscripts Of Hadith And Its Studies

This paper deals with the issues concerning the personal duties and academic requirements that should be fulfilled by anyone interested in studying and critically editing the manuscripts in the field of hadith and its studies. The goal is to facilitate the guidelines for the researchers, especially for analyzing old manuscripts. There are also certain matters that should be made to have a well-established methodology in order to achieve good result during the time of the investigation. In particular, personal qualities of researchers such as academic sincerity, perseverance and possession of knowledge in various aspects of the manuscript and related subjects are indispensable to ensure validity and precision of the knowledge transferred in the text studied. At the same time, some of the important steps and tools in studying hadith texts from manuscripts are also discussed together with some of the symbols commonly used by the scribes and authors in their works. This working paper will endeavor the criteria of the modern-world of manuscript research and also the criteria as a researcher, mainly through the muhaddithin’s methodology. Despite its precise nature, the issues highlighted in this paper provides an important overview of the proper textual editing process for those interested to study Islamic manuscripts, especially in the field of hadith and its sciences.
